چکیده

The use of marine sponges dates back thousands years, and interest in these animals is increasing as new applications are discovered. Their potential extensive, both their ancient still popular bath for cosmetics regarding the more recent discovery bioactive secondary metabolites mainly pharmaceutical industry less developed aquariology. Despite proven biofiltration ecosystem restoration ability biomass supply problem interested industries, few integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems incorporate invertebrates facilities. Therefore, this brief review, benefits that could bring to rapidly growing IMTA summarized, highlighting suitability a circular blue economy.

Aquaculture’s Turquoise Revolution

On the menu at the Rossmount Inn in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, on the Atlantic coast of Canada, you may find kelp-wrapped salmon– avocado tartare with sesame cranberry– apple vinaigrette, citrus–soy glaze, cilantro, and chives. It sounds mouthwatering, but this is no ordinary seafood. The farmed seaweed (Saccharina latissima) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are not only side by side on the...

Natural Product Chemistry of the Marine Sponges

A systematic search for constituents of marine sponges has yielded over one hundred new compounds, most of them with unique structural features. A broad survey of the field is presented and certain topics, particularly those closely related to recent work done in our own laboratory on sesquiterpenoids, are discussed in more detail.

Emerging Roles for Natural MicroRNA Sponges

Recently, a non-coding RNA expressed from a human pseudogene was reported to regulate the corresponding protein-coding mRNA by acting as a decoy for microRNAs (miRNAs) that bind to common sites in the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs). It was proposed that competing for miRNAs might be a general activity of pseudogenes. This study raises questions about the potential ability of thousands of non-co...

Controlling emerging infectious diseases in salmon aquaculture.

In this paper, the authors review the impacts of diseases facing salmon aquaculture, drawing lessons from terrestrial animal diseases. They discuss the implementation of current control strategies, taking into account transmission patterns (vertical versus horizontal), disease reservoirs, and interactions with wild fish. In addition, the decision-making context of aquatic disease control and th...
